What is a Smart City?
In the last few years, smart cities have grown and expanded all around the world. But what are really smart cities? Accordingly to the definition, a smart city is facing many challenges on many different domains such as having sufficient fresh water access, cleaner energy, smart buildings that understand their occupants’ needs and the ability of travelling efficiently while keeping the city greener.
A smart city needs to renew and rethink where we used to live for centuries.
Obviously, some cities are doing much better than others, such as Singapore, Barcelona or London. For most of these three cities, they based their urban area’s growth on making their inhabitants’ daily life easier and simpler.
For example, in Barcelona, they installed many sensors around the city: to help and manage traffic, to monitor air quality and noise with street lights as well as sensors system for irrigation letting people know when rain is predicted and will adjust city’s sprinklers accordingly.
